Why You Should Have Your Kids Take Piano Lessons

  1. A new study finds that piano lessons can help kids build up their language skills.
  • There is evidence that early exposure to piano practice enhances the processing of sounds extending from piano to languages. For the study, researchers sorted 74 Mandarin speaking Chinese kindergartners into three groups.
  • One group took three 45 min piano lessons. The next group got 45 minutes of additional reading instruction and the final group did neither.
  • After six months the piano group had distinguished itself in a major way. The piano group was much better at distinguishing between spoken words that are different by only one consonant. For example, P and E which can sound so similar. The human brain has to make quick decisions. This suggests that piano lessons affect a crucial and complex element of language processing.
  1. Performing in public builds confidence
    • Playing in front of people will help to build self confidence in your children as they go through different phases of their lives. Even in my college career, there were times where I was nervous to public speak and perform. I was able to rely on this experience of performing under pressure in any setting.
  2. Use skills to serve
    • Growing up I had the opportunity to lead worship at my home Church using the gifts that God has given me to glorify Him. Once you take the time to learn an instrument, there are so many opportunities to share these gifts with others.
      1. Leading worship
      2. Performing at nursing homes
      3. Playing for a talent show
