What does Piano Sensei mean?
What does piano sensei mean? In Japanese, “sensei” means “teacher.” More specifically, it means “one who comes before.” A "sensei" is one who has experienced more life than you. He or she has gained much wisdom and insight throughout life’s journeys. With an understanding of the word “sensei” under your belt, the phrase “piano sensei” becomes obvious. It simply means piano teacher.
Now, allow me to give you some background of the origins of The Piano Sensei. I have played the piano since I was four years old. Not very long after playing the piano, I began studying Shotokan Karate. For most of my childhood, piano and karate were integral to my life. I grew in my knowledge of piano playing, and I earned my second-degree black belt when I was 20 years old.
As an adult I taught martial arts. I noticed that my young students were very motivated by the karate belt system. They loved receiving their belt stripes, new belt colors, and certificates of achievement. The brainchild of the business began to actualize. Why couldn’t karate-type incentives be incorporated in teaching children’s piano lessons?
I launched the music studio in 2015 with the intent of bringing music lessons into students’ homes and inspiring kids to learn to play the piano. With The Piano Sensei as our platform, our instructors and I have had the opportunity to teach students of varying backgrounds and demographics. For our students ages 5-11, we incorporate The Piano Sensei motivational curriculum to create a fun atmosphere for learning.
That’s the skinny on the meaning of Piano Sensei and why our business exists. We’re changing the music learning industry by putting a brand name behind teachers who you can trust for an enjoyable and knowledgeable music experience. Learn more about our teachers by reading their bios!
